How We Approach our Instagram Strategy

Instagram is a great platform, and it’s where a lot of young married couples are hanging out. That’s why we focus on it.

Maybe a little bit surprising, but about 75% of our followers are female. We typically think that this is due to the females caring more about financial security and harmony in marriage more than males, but it could be other reasons too. (Don’t feel bad if you’re a male and follow us.)

With this recognition here are three things we do to broaden our reach to our target market that doesn’t cost us any money:

  1. Interview and post financial stories of married couples under 30.

We realized that we needed to have the opportunity to reach our target audience in a way that didn’t break the bank. So we started asking if we could interview couples about their financial stories. We ask questions like:

  • What was the first discussion you ever had about finances together?
  • What has been the biggest financial challenge you’ve faced together?
  • How were you both raised with money?

We then summarize these twenty minute interviews and post them with a picture of the couple and tag them in it. They share the picture with their followers and we get more followers and more people to interview.

We’ve conducted over 50 interviews so far, and will continue to do so.

2. Working with Others Followings

Have you ever heard the term “Borrowing other’s audiences”?

It’s important to build and own your own audience. To do so however, borrow from other’s audiences that have already been created.

We will go those who are in are target market who have established audiences (typically 3000+ followers) and offer to give them our product for free or to teach them a live class for free. In exchange, they post us on their profile and we get to interact with their followers.

Both of these strategies just cost time, not money.

While it does take a long time and can sometimes feel agonizingly slow, we have real followers who are actually engaged and interested with our content. About 20-25% of our followers regularly engage with us. This is phenonmenal compared to the 3%.

What type of following can you start? Interact personally with your target audience (interviews) and borrow audiences, and with a good amount of patience and consistency, you’ll be reaping the rewards.
