Newborn Must Haves

After two weeks of having a newborn this is everything that we have actually been using!

Sleep/Lounging:

Snuggle Me Organic– This is definitely one of the more luxury baby items out there but I got it as a baby shower gift for Lucy and we didn’t use it very much. However, this time around Charlie LIVES. IN. IT.

Swaddles– This is my favorite brand for colors and size but really there are so many options. I recommend getting about 3-5 depending on how snuggly your baby is and how often you do laundry.

Cradle/Bassinet- My Dad handmade me a cradle when I was a baby and we have been using that one for Charlie next to our bed.

Pacifier- The hospital ones have worked best for us! We have two.

Rocking Chair– This is the one I have!

Diapering:

Changing Pad and Cover- At first, I thought we would go without a changing pad this time around and just use one of these Gathre mats on the floor but it has definitely been so helpful to have a place at hip height and change him standing at this age. I have been using this changing pad on our dresser with this burts bees cover and it has been perfect!

Wipes and Diapers- Pretty self explanatory!

Nasal Spray– This was something our pediatrician recommended instead of using a nose fritta or a bulb syringe too often because it can cause their nasal passage way to get inflamed and it has worked wonders!

Feeding:

Lanolin– DO not get the knock off brand of this stuff. I repeat, do not get the knock off brand. It does not work well at all. Lanolin has saved my nipples this time around with breastfeeding. I am a BIG fan.

Reusable Breast Pads– I started out with the disposable ones but found that they were not very comfortable. These have been SO much better!

Boppy Pillow– I was so happy when I finally found a neutral cover for it! Ikea strikes again.

Breast Pump- You can often get an electric one through your insurance for free. We still have ours from Lucy but I have actually been using this manual one and have loved it so much more! It is only $12 and A-MAZING. You just put it on one side while you are feeding on the other. Zero pain. Zero extra time. It is a game changer!

Vitamin D Supplements– Also a pediatrician recommendation if you are breastfeeding.

Bottles– We used these with both of our kids so far and they have been great! We have three in the smaller size and 3 in the larger size.

**Note for formula fed babies: If you or your little one aren’t very picky, I have found the cheapest formula to be at Costco. Parent’s Choice at Walmart is another option if you don’t have a Costco membership.**

Clothing:

Onesies and Pajamas- Most of you already know my feelings about how “less is more” when it comes to clothes. Everyone in our family has a capsule wardrobe and it has been wonderful! My favorite places to shop for baby/kids clothes are Zara, H&M and Baby Gap. The majority of the things I find are second hand and I fill in the gaps with these. We have 10 (size 0-3 mo) onesies and 10 (size 0-3 mo) pajamas for this age and so far it has been a great amount! We have some pants to go with the onesies but so far he mostly has just been living in a onesie with a swaddle.

Bathing:

Bath– We use this little bath in the tub!

Shampoo- We have just been using the one from the hospital still! ( I am telling you the hospital sets you up nicely!)

Washcloths– We have this bamboo set from when Lucy was a baby!

Other:

Promptly Journal– This is another luxury item in my opinion but I have loved it. You can document your child’s life from pregnancy to when they are 18 all in one place!

Diaper Bag- I am using the same one I had with Lucy and it looks like they don’t sell it anymore. However, I did see this one on Amazon for $12?? If you are in need of one, this might be worth a try!

Car Seat– LOTS of opinions out there about carseats. We ended up going with this one because it was neutral, light weight and could last them all the way up to 35 lbs.

And really that is it! Everything we have ACTUALLY used these first few weeks! Hopefully you can see that it actually isn’t that much and you can buy things as they grow if needed.

If you are worried about cost, I am sure you could cut this list down even more, buy things second hand etc! Babies really don’t need much!

Congrats on your little one!
